BYOD DISASTER RECOVERY REVIEW
Last Updated: September 30, 2025
Introduction
Our Disaster Recovery (DR) strategy ensures that critical systems remain available and recoverable in the event of unexpected failures. We leverage Amazon Web Services (AWS), a globally recognized, industry-leading cloud platform, to deliver high availability, scalability and security for our infrastructure. AWS provides a broad set of Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) and Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) capabilities, including automated backups, cross-region replication and real-time monitoring, which form the foundation of our disaster recovery approach.
By utilizing AWS, we benefit from a highly resilient architecture with multiple availability zones and regions, continuous data replication, and best-in-class security standards. This ensures that our customers’ data and applications are protected against hardware failures, software issues and even large-scale regional disruptions.
Our DR strategy is designed to minimize downtime and data loss, while offering flexible recovery options tailored to the criticality of each workload. This document provides a clear overview of the recovery measures in place for both Amazon RDS databases and EC2 workloads, giving prospective customers confidence in our commitment to business continuity.
Scope
This document covers disaster recovery for:
- Amazon RDS Databases (Relational Database Service)
- Amazon EC2 Workloads (Virtual Servers and EBS Volumes)
It is designed for prospective customers to understand our resilience measures and does not include internal-only operational procedures.
Roles & Responsibilities
- Cloud Operations Team: Monitors system health, initiates recovery processes, and performs DR testing.
- IT Leadership: Oversees compliance with recovery objectives and approves DR plan updates.
- Customer Support Team: Provides communication and status updates to customers during a disaster event.
Amazon RDS Disaster Recovery Options
Amazon RDS provides multiple ways to protect databases, ranging from automated backups to real-time replication across regions.
| Option | Description | Recovery Time | Data Loss Risk | Cost | Recommended For |
| Automated Backups | Daily snapshots in same region | Tens of minutes–hours | Only up to last backup | Low (included) | Basic protection / non-critical workloads |
| Cross-Region Backups | Snapshots copied to secondary region via AWS Backup | Hours | Data as of last snapshot | Medium (cross-region storage & transfer) | Stronger protection, moderate downtime acceptable |
| Multi-Region / Read Replica | Continuous replication to another region | Minutes | Minimal | High (standby DB running continuously) | Production-critical systems with minimal downtime |
Amazon EC2 Disaster Recovery Options
For EC2 workloads, disaster recovery options range from snapshot-based recovery to full real-time replication.
| Option | Description | Recovery Time | Data Loss Risk | Cost | Recommended For |
| Snapshot Lifecycle Manager | Automated EBS snapshots in same region | Minutes–hours | Only up to last snapshot | Low | Cost-effective / non-critical workloads |
| Cross-Region Backups | Snapshots copied to secondary region | Minutes–hours | Data as of last snapshot | Medium | Stronger protection, moderate downtime acceptable |
| AWS Elastic Disaster Recovery | Continuous replication to secondary region | Minutes | Minimal | High | Production-critical workloads with minimal downtime |
Visual Diagram (Failover Flow)
- Primary Region: Normal operation for RDS / EC2.
- Automated Backups: Snapshot copies remain in same region.
- Cross-Region Backups: Arrows showing snapshot replication to secondary region.
- Multi-Region / Read Replica & AWS Elastic Disaster Recovery: Continuous replication to DR region with failover arrows.
- Failover Event: Promotion of standby RDS/EC2 instances in DR region.
- Recovery: Services continue in DR region with minimal downtime.
Testing & Maintenance
- Regular DR drills ensure that recovery procedures work as expected.
- Plans are reviewed and updated at least annually or after significant system changes.
- Customers can be assured that both RDS and EC2 recovery methods are actively maintained and tested.
Customer Assurance
- Our DR strategy aligns with best practices for cloud disaster recovery.
- Supports business continuity objectives with clear Recovery Time Objectives (RTO) and Recovery Point Objectives (RPO).
- Maintains compliance with relevant security and operational standards.
